Chapter 17
It’s weird being here, in this car, with people I don’t normally associate with—though what Mike said earlier is true, I have raided Clarissa’s table for brownies on more than one occasion. And at those times, I have absolutely admired her backside. Even though she has historically been rat-spit crazy, a guy can’t help himself from looking at a girl’s assets sometimes, you know? The only way to not have ever looked at her butt would have entailed poking my own eyes out with something sharp.
We all know that would never happen.
Clarissa pipes up from the driver’s seat. “Hey, did everyone text their parents?”
“Trying again now, no response yet, and my cell’s getting really low,” Mike says, his calm voice slightly downturned, like he’s losing hope.
“Just got through to mine,” Jaime chirps. “They were really worried because they couldn’t get in touch, and there’s a mandatory curfew tonight because of the state of emergency, but everything’s cool and they’re waiting for me at home.”
“My mom and dad are okay too,” Lila says. “But my sister is bawling her eyes out. Thought I was dead. And when I get home, I’m going to milk that for all it’s worth. She’ll be my slave for life.” She smiles wickedly.
Everyone laughs—everyone but me.
As if reading my mind, Clarissa says, “What about your family, Joe?”
I don’t know what to say. The words in my mouth feel heavy. They sink like a stone to the bottom of my stomach and I sigh, holding Ruby tighter, burying my face in the warmth of her shirt so I don’t lose it in front of everyone. Plus, I’m not sure I want Ruby to find out Mom and Dad are dead just yet. Not like this. Not tonight.
Mike leans over and whispers to Clarissa and Lila, “His family…they’re all gone.”
Clarissa hits the brakes and we all jerk forward in our seats. She pulls over by the side of the road, and parks next to a mostly deserted parking lot.
Then she turns around in her seat. “I’m so sorry.” Her face is twisted in anguish. “I lost my best friend tonight, too, if that helps.” Lila puts her hand on Clarissa’s shoulder, then she looks at me too, her expression one of total sympathy.
I nod quickly, choking back whatever feelings are rising inside me, threatening to burst.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Lila says.
I shake my head. “Not in front of the kid,” I manage to say, Ruby still fast asleep in my arms.
“Sorry, dude,” Jaime says, leaning forward. “That sucks.”
We hear a buzz, and Mike reaches for his phone again. “It’s my parents…they’re safe!” He high-fives everyone, then turns to me. “Joe, my folks said you and Ruby can stay with us as long as you have to.”
I nod again, and this time I feel hot liquid escaping from my right eye. I wipe it quickly with my hand and buck up, trying not to spill the waterworks.
It’s so ironic that for so many years my
